Patrick Petzall is a member of the Construction Law Group at Cassels Brock, where he focuses primarily on construction and commercial contracts and supports the Construction Group’s litigation team. In his role he has assisted in various matters including disputes concerning the construction of a tailings management facility, the revision of international mining services agreements and assisting in discovery documentation review for a major construction litigation.
From 2014 to 2017 he was a member of the Contracts and Tender Management Team of Baxter Corporation, a global leading medical devices company. As the lead terms and conditions specialist Patrick reviewed and assessed contractual risks of multiple commercial agreements including no less than 150 major RFPs issued by national and regional Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs) like HealthPro, MedBuy, Plexxus, Mohawk (now merged with MedBuy), Shared Services West and Sigma Santé, as well as those issued by Provincial Health Authorities such as Alberta Health Services, BCCSS and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority among others, ensuring that top management was aware of legal and contractual risks.
From 2012 to 2014 he was a consultant at Cassels Brock working with the Business Law Group where he drafted and revised metals streaming, net smelter return royalty, EPC, joint venture and asset and share purchase agreements for several mining companies in connection with their mining properties and operations located in Canada, U.S.A., Latin America and Africa.
He has extensive experience in negotiating, drafting, interpreting and managing risks of multi-million dollar contracts in the areas of construction, oil and gas, mining, power generation, and in international project finance. Patrick’s experience includes drafting, negotiating, and monitoring performance of large-scale EPC contracts, public procurement, international project and public sector financing as well as negotiating and drafting PPP-related agreements.
Prior to consulting at Cassels Brock, Patrick practised law for over thirteen years at a leading law firm in Caracas, Venezuela. While there, Patrick assisted multiple construction and engineering companies including Mourik, Siemens, Hitachi Plant Engineering & Construction, The Alstom Group, Lafarge and others in construction law and contractual matters including EPC contracts as well as in public procurement, administrative and corporate law areas. He also assisted international banking and financial institutions like the China Development Bank, Deutsche Bank, Gazprombank and Abn Amro in connection with multi-billion-dollar loans granted to Venezuelan governmental entities for the financing of major infrastructure projects.
Patrick is fully fluent in both English and Spanish.
