In The NewsU of T Wins the 2011 Cassels Brock CupPublished: 03/30/2011 University of Toronto Faculty of Law prevailed over Osgoode Hall Law School at the fourth annual Cassels Brock Cup held on March 26, 2011 at the Court of Appeal, Osgoode Hall. Twenty first-year students from each school argued an appeal of the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in R. v. Morelli before a distinguished panels of judges consisting of justices from the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice, as well as experienced criminal and civil counsel. The decision of R. v. Morelli considered whether the search and seizure of the accused’s personal computer infringed his rights under section 8 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and if so, whether the evidence obtained as a result of the illegal search should be excluded under section 24(2) of the Charter. U of T reclaimed the trophy for receiving a higher cumulative score than its cross-town rival. The Cassels Brock Cup has now alternated each of the past four years between the two schools.
