Tom Isaac Discusses the Duty to Consult with the National Post

Publish: 03/08/2017

Tom Isaac is quoted as an expert in an article titled "Mining and the Métis Provide an Opportunity, Ruling Makes Law 'Absolutely Clear,' " published by the National Post, which looks at the need for mining companies to consult with Aboriginal groups prior to the commencement of work on a Canadian property.

Writes Drew Hasselback: "[W]here companies once might have thought the duty to consult required them to speak with one of Canada's more than 600 'pre-contact' First Nations groups, recent Supreme Court of Canada decisions confirm they might also need to deal with the Métis people."
Says Tom: "The law is absolutely clear. There's no room for debate on it. It's an equal consideration. It's not anything less."

Tom spoke about the constitutional rights of  the Métis at a session on Aboriginal Law at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) on March 7. "This stuff isn't necessarily a challenge. Quite frankly, it's an opportunity."
