In The NewsMark Bennett Quoted on Post-Recession Merger Activity in Canada in National PostPublished: 09/22/2010 On September 22, 2010, Securities partner Mark Bennett was quoted in "Merger Activity Shifts Ground," an article which appeared in the National Post. The article noted that M&A activity in Canada has changed as a result of the recession. Prior to 2007, growth by acquisition or merger was typical. Now strategic acquisitions are typical. Lawyers observe that growth acquisitions are being driven by opportunities created by the recession. "The players who are making those acquisitions are those who came out of the recession strong. Their M&A is opportunistic," said Mark Bennett, a partner in the firm's Securities group. Mr. Bennett noted there are exceptions to that approach. "Pre-recession, other companies had an ability to compete. Now you're seeing a narrowing of the field. Companies are taking advantage of the field. It's more about the big opportunity, as opposed to the incremental opportunity." |
