In The NewsLawrence Herman Notes Change in Foreign Investment RegulationsPublished: 08/18/2010 International Trade lawyer Lawrence Herman was quoted in "The March Towards Looser Investment Rules," an article which appeared in the August 18, 2010 edition of Embassy, Canada's Foreign Policy Newsweekly. The article provided an overview of the changes being made to loosen foreign investment rules by the government of Canada. One of the changes is the start of a Cabinet review of investments the government considers threats to national security. Lawrence Herman, a former Canadian foreign service officer, noted that this change is the biggest in foreign investment rules over the last few years. He said that there had been an increasing concern in government about a sudden jump in investment propositions by state-owned enterprises, such as many of those from China, that are “subject to the political control of their governments.” Larry said, “That’s the big change in the regulations, and going forward, we can expect greater reviews of investments by state-owned enterprises, leading to greater restrictions.” |
