John McKeown Refutes Concerns over New gTLDs in the Globe and Mail

New rules dramatically expanding the number of Internet domain names have sparked controversy from the advertising industry, who claim Canadian companies wanting to defend their brands will face heavy costs.  Agencies such as the Interactive Advertising Bureau are warning they don't like the new policy or the new requirements for registration, which include a stringent process designed to prevent cybersquatting abuse.

John McKeown refutes the arguments made by the advertising industry, claiming that their worries may be overblown. For many businesses, the new domain name regime could open up significant opportunities, allowing consumers to find companies and products more easily on the Internet and ultimately cutting back on the need for traditional advertising.
