Tax Information Exchange Agreements – Impact on International Tax Planning

Date: 05/28/2010
Professional: Lorne H. Saltman
Conference: 12th National STEP Conference
Organizer: Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP)
City: Toronto

Lorne Saltman spoke on a workshop panel that discussed Tax Information Exchange Agreements (TIEAs) at the 12th annual Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) Canada Conference on June 8, 2010.

This panel reviewed the proliferation of TIEAs and their potential impact on tax and estate planning, from both the Canadian and U.S. perspective. What will this mean in the way of international business flexibility? Will the corresponding death of offshore secrecy drive greater fiscal responsibility, or just increase the compliance overburden? Will this be a death-blow to some offshore treaty countries, or simply create new opportunities for broader economic competition?

Lorne was one of two senior international planners who shared their views on the near and long-term effects of a watershed development in international law. He is a Partner in the firm's Tax & Trusts group.
